Mandela Washington Fellowship

In the summer of 2023, the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders will provide approximately 700 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a United States college or university with support for professional development after they return home. It is the flagship programme of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

PRIZES

Academic and Leadership Institutes
Each Mandela Washington Fellow takes part in a six-week Academic and Leadership Institute at a U.S. college or university in one of three tracks: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, or Public Management.

Mandela Washington Fellowship Summit
Following the academic component of the Fellowship, the Fellows visit Washington, D.C., for a Summit featuring networking and panel discussions with U.S. leaders from the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

Professional Development Experience
Fellows may apply for the opportunity to work with private, public, and non-profit organisations for up to six weeks, either immediately following the Summit during their Fellowship or as Alumni. Both Fellows and Hosts benefit from discussing shared issues and challenges in their sectors, broadening their perspectives, and positioning U.S. organisations for international engagement.

Opportunities for Alumni
Fellows continue to build the skills they have developed during their time in the U.S. through access to ongoing professional development, networking, and collaboration opportunities with support from the U.S. Department of State and affiliated partners.

Virtual Programming
The Fellowship leverages stakeholder expertise to deliver a suite of virtual programming for the Fellowship Network to support their continued leadership development and strengthen their access to networks and resources.
